There is more than one type of financial adviser and not all of them are independent.

If you are unsure which type of adviser you are dealing with, ask them. Advisers are obliged to give you the information the first time you contact them.

Tied advisers can only sell products from one financial company to which they are ‘tied’ and will usually be employed by that company. Often when you speak direct to an insurance company you would be dealing with a ‘tied adviser’.

Multi tied advisers can sell products from a limited number of companies one of which would usually employ the salesperson. Often when you speak to one of the high street banks or building societies you would be speaking to a ‘multi tied adviser’.

A salespersons imperative is to sell you a commission generating product; the availability of commission for a successful product sale inevitably taints any ‘advice’ that is given.

Insurance and investment companies may, in some cases, provide pensions and other types of financial services products to meet real needs. However the challenge is not just to find the right company or product but to also ensure that you get the right advice to start with and then have an ongoing review process in future so that as your circumstances, objectives, priorities and investment risk profile change any plans or arrangements can adapt.
